Dean Rand Elected to American Law Institute

Kathryn R.L. Rand

Dean Kathryn R.L. Rand was one of 63 new members elected to the American Law Institute (ALI) this spring. Founded in 1923, the ALI is dedicated to legal research and reform. Elected membership in ALI consists of judges, lawyers, and legal academics from across the U.S. and many foreign countries, selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law. Elected membership in the ALI is limited to 3,000 members, and is a distinct professional honor.

“We are very proud to welcome this distinguished group into membership in the Institute,” ALI President Roberta Cooper Ramo said of the newly elected members. “The process of being selected into the ALI is rigorous. Membership is a significant honor, as well as a promise to contribute to the health of the legal system in the U.S. and, increasingly, that of legal systems around the world. With the formidable challenges facing our world, these additions to our ranks will enhance our ability to take on the major legal problems of the times and develop solutions.”

The ALI also boasts a substantial ex officio membership, including the Chief Justice and Associate Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Chief Judges of each U.S. Court of Appeals, the Attorney General and Solicitor General of the United States, the Chief Justice of the highest court of each state, law school Deans, and the Presidents of the American Bar Association, each state bar association, and other prominent legal organizations.

Dean Rand joins the other ALI elected and ex officio members from North Dakota: SBAND President David S. Maring, North Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerald W. VandeWalle, Robert Vogel, Daniel M. Traynor, Paul A. LeBel, Herbert L. Meschke, and Fred C. Rathert.
