Setting up Student Printers for Windows XP

  • Download Required Files to your Desktop:
  • Installing "Other Network File and Print Services" for Microsoft Windows
    • Open the Start Menu and select "Control Panel", may be located in "Settings"
    • Open "Add or Remove Programs"
    • Select "Add/Remove Windows Components" in the very left column.
    • Scroll down and place a check in the box next to "Other Network File and Print Services"
    • Select Next.
    • If a popup windows appears asking you to enter your Windows CD...
      • Press "OK".
      • Browse to your Desktop and open the folder LPD.
      • Click Open.
    • Click Finish.
  • Remove all previous printers you currently have set up for the Law School Library.
    • Open the Start Menu and select "Printers and Faxes", may be located in "Settings"
    • Right click any printer you currently have set up for the Law School Library (Circ1, Circ2, CircDesk, Circulation Desk, etc) and select Delete
  • Install the Black and White Circulation Desk Printer
    • Open the Start Menu and select "Printers and Faxes", may be located in "Settings"
    • Open "Add Printer"
    • Click Next
    • Uncheck the box that says "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer"
    • Click Next
    • Select "Create a new port:"
    • Change "Type of port:" to "LPR Port"
    • Click Next
    • Change the "Name of Address of server providing lpd:" to print.law.und.edu
    • Change the "Name of printer or print queue on that server:" to CircDeskBW
    • Click OK
    • Click the "Have Disk..." button
    • Click the "Browse..." button
    • Browse to the C Drive (C:) and open the directory "HP LJ5100"
    • Click "Open" again when in the "HP LJ5100" directory
    • Click OK
    • The only printer that should be visible is HP LaserJet 5100 PCL 6. Click Next
    • Change the printer name to CircDeskBW
    • If you wish to leave this as you default printer which is suggest if you are mainly to be printing from the Law School, select "Yes", otherwise select "No"
    • Click Next
    • When it asks to print a test page, select "No"
    • Click Next
    • Click Finish
    • Right-Click CircDeskBW and select "Properties".
    • Select the "Device Settings" tab on the top of the window.
    • Under "Installable Options", set "Duplex Unit (for 2-Sided Printing):" to Installed
    • Click OK
  • Install the Color Circulation Desk Printer
    • Open the Start Menu and select "Printers and Faxes", may be located in "Settings"
    • Open "Add Printer"
    • Click Next
    • Uncheck the box that says "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer"
    • Click Next
    • Select "Create a new port:"
    • Change "Type of port:" to "LPR Port"
    • Click Next
    • Change the "Name of Address of server providing lpd:" to print.law.und.edu
    • Change the "Name of printer or print queue on that server:" to CircDeskColor
    • Click OK
    • Click the "Have Disk..." button
    • Click the "Browse..." button
    • Browse to the C Drive (C:) and open the directory "HP CLJ4650"
    • Click "Open" again when in the "HP CLJ4650" directory
    • Click OK
    • The only printer that should be visible is HP Color LaserJet 4650 PCL 6. Click Next
    • Change the printer name to CircDeskColor
    • Select "No" to not have this printer as your default.
    • Click Next
    • When it asks to print a test page, select "No"
    • Click Next
    • Click Finish
