Professor Davis received his law degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 1970 and his LL.M. from Yale Law School in 1980. He received an Archibald Bush Foundation Leadership Fellowship in 1979-80. In the summers of 1982 and 1984, he studied in Bonn and West Berlin under the auspices of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst.

Before joining the UND law faculty in 1971, Davis served in U.S. Army Intelligence and later in the private practice of law in Colorado. He also served for eight years as UND¹s General Counsel.

In 2003, Davis became the Dean, then Vice President, of the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia. Upon his retirement from ASL in 2007, he returned to UND as Visiting Professor, and is presently teaching the first-year Contracts course. Also in 2007, UND bestowed the honorary title of Dean Emeritus on Davis.

Dean Davis serves as a Commissioner on the North Dakota Commission on Legal Counsel for Indigents and on the Board of the North Dakota Museum of Art.
